ALL ABOUT TRAVERTINE
Coming from limestone family, travertine is
referred to as travertine limestone or travertine marble, when it is neither
limestone nor marble. Travertine has been used as a building material since
Roman times. It was used in Coliseum of Rome as well. Visible holes and
crevices are there on the surface of travertine, which is a sedimentary stone.
Travertine can be used for/as flooring
material, countertops, showers, paving patios, garden paths, wall coverings and
wall cladding. The minerals in travertine are susceptible to acidic reactions,
therefore, environmental exposure and location must be carefully considered.
Because of iron compounds and other
impurities tiles will differ in color. Variation in color is caused due to this
among individual tiles, and this is the reason why natural stones are never
single colored. No two tiles are similar in appearance due to this very reason.
Hence, while using such tiles, make sure that even with the color variation,
the tiles should closely match each other and the difference should not be
visible to the eye.
Travertine finishes are honed (matte),
polished (shiny), tumbled or brushed (textured surfaces). Honed finish is the
most common one and it is smooth and flat. For the ones who want the light to
get the least reflected, tumbled surfaces are the best. Travertine comes in
crosscuts or veins.
